WHAT IS IT?

Liraglutide is a GLP-1 agonist, which means it is an artificial version of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Liraglutide binds to GLP-1 receptors in the body and mimics the action of the natural GLP-1 hormone.

WHAT DOES IT TARGET?

  • Brain: Reduces appetite by acting on the part of the brain that regulates hunger and satiety.
  • Stomach and intestines: Slows gastric emptying, causing you to feel full longer after a meal.
  • Pancreas: Helps your pancreas release insulin after eating, keeping your blood sugar stable. The main effect is a reduction in hunger.

BMI CLINIC BOOG

GENERAL INFORMATION

Saxenda (liraglutide) is a medication prescribed for adults with overweight (BMI of 27 or higher) or obesity (BMI of 30 or higher). It is used to aid in weight loss and is typically prescribed when weight loss through diet and exercise alone has not been sufficient. Saxenda is designed to be used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

Saxenda is administered once daily using a pre-filled injection pen. The injection is given subcutaneously (under the skin), typically in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The pen is easy to use and requires no prior preparation.

Saxenda contains a substance (liraglutide) that mimics a natural hormone in your body. The medication helps increase the feeling of fullness and reduce appetite, aiding in the reduction of overall calorie intake.

Liraglutide works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is naturally produced by the intestine in response to food. This hormone has multiple effects:

  • It suppresses appetite.
  • It slows down gastric emptying, making you feel full for longer.
  • It helps stabilize blood sugar levels, which is especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes.

These combined effects lead to a gradual reduction in calorie intake and support weight loss.

  • Patients using liraglutide lost an average of 5-10% of their body weight within a year.

Treatment with Saxenda starts with a dose of 0.6 mg per day, gradually increasing to 3 mg per day. Gradual dose escalation is important to help the body adjust to the medication and to minimize potential side effects.

Saxenda is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this medication if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
  • Have a condition known as multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Have previously had inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.
  • Are allergic to liraglutide or any of the other ingredients in Saxenda.

Do not use it in combination with other weight loss medications or similar drugs.

Like any medication, Saxenda can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea (especially at the beginning).
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Fatigue.
  • Increased heart rate.

Rarer but more serious side effects include:

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Gallbladder problems.
  • Kidney problems.
  • Allergic reactions such as skin rash or breathing difficulties.

Contact your doctor if you experience severe or persistent side effects.

  • Unopened injection pen: Store in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.
  • Opened injection pen: Store in the refrigerator or at room temperature (up to 30°C) and use within 30 days.
  • Do not expose to extreme heat or freezing, as this may reduce its effectiveness.

For a complete list of potential side effects, contraindications, and detailed information on usage, please consult the official package leaflet. This can be found on the website of the Medicines Evaluation Board, via Apotheek.nl, or the Saxenda® website.

Saxenda is injected subcutaneously daily at a fixed time, preferably in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It is recommended to regularly alternate injection sites to prevent irritation or skin reactions. The injection should not be administered into a muscle or blood vessel. Ensure that you use the injection pen correctly and store it properly according to the instructions in the package leaflet.

The effects of Saxenda vary from person to person. Many individuals experience a reduction in appetite and initial weight loss after a few weeks. The greatest effects are often seen after several months, especially when the medication is combined with a diet and physical activity.

If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
